Kate Middleton has been preparing to be queen ever since the Archbishop of Canterbury asked if she took Prince William to be her husband and she said "I will."
Which isn't to say the Princess of Wales' ultimate role has been top of mind 24/7 for the past 15 years, but agreeing to marry the member of the royal family who was second (and now is first) in line to the throne came with its share of built-in responsibilities from day one.
So far, the mother of Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10 and Prince Louis, 7, has smashed it, going from impressively poised royal bride, to graceful duchess, to spectacularly stoic partner of the future king, all under a spotlight that never shuts off.
And as Kate celebrates her 44th birthday Jan. 9, a year removed from sharing she was in remission following cancer treatment, the queen-to-be aspect of her life is once again at the forefront of her schedule.
For starters, she and William will each be taking on the role of Guarantor of Royal Warrants this spring, meaning they'll be able to give the royal seal of approval to their "preferred" products and services, in turn giving those companies an affiliation to bear with pride.
The couple's latest gig comes, as so many of their obligations do, at the behest of the monarch. King Charles III has been entrusting his eldest son and daughter-in-law with even more public-facing duties as the years go by, the 77-year-old having his own health to look after since he also started undergoing cancer treatment in 2024.
While undergoing chemotherapy in 2024 (a year William pointedly described as "brutal"), Kate scrubbed her schedule of all but 13 public events and then started adding more to her plate in 2025.
When Kate joined the Trooping the Colour procession last June, serving as honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards, she was "glowing," according to former Queen Elizabeth II spokeswoman Ailsa Anderson, who told People, "Every time we see her out and about, she looks better and better."
Noted royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith, "She projected the confidence of someone who has enthusiastically reconnected with her public duties."
In fact, per the Court Circular, Kate notched 68 events last year. And she's already been out and about with William in 2026, joining him Jan. 8 on a visit to Charing Cross Hospital in London.
But while they could make a bigger deal out of birthdays if they wanted to, Kate and William tend to celebrate their—and their children's—respective trips around the sun with private gatherings at home.
Charles' former butler Grant Harrold predicted on the U.K.'s Heart Bingo that the king and Queen Camilla could give Kate "a hand-me-down from his mother" for a present, Harrold said. "It could be something from his private collection of things that he likes to give family members." Or, the erstwhile royal employee added, "it might be something he's advised from the Royal Collection, maybe something that's a family heirloom that he's allowed to pass on."
As for Kate's husband, "There are a couple of options for presents from William," Harrold said. "It could either be something jewelry-based, or it could be something that she needs for the home, or it could be a mixture of both."
Meanwhile, home for Kate, William, George, Charlotte and Louis is now eight-bedroom Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park, where they relocated last year from Adelaide Cottage.
The family settled down in Windsor in 2022 so the kids could all attend nearby Lambrook School together. George will move on in the fall, exact location TBD, though royal experts have noted that William and brother Prince Harry's alma mater Eton College—a boarding school for 13-to-18-year-old boys in Berkshire—is a short drive away.
So, with George in his last term at Lambrook, Kate is relishing her usual drop-off and pick-up routine even more.
"They're getting big now," Kate said when a well-wisher asked about her brood in September during a visit to the Natural History Museum. And during the family's annual walk to church on Christmas, in response to a fan's prediction that George could end up towering over her and William, she replied, "I know, I swear, he’s catching up with everybody, isn’t he?"
All the while, Kate and William are continuing to prepare George for his predestined role as well. In addition to the kid-friendly perks like VIP treatment at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour or prime seats at soccer matches, the 12-year-old is starting to join his parents at more grown-up events, such as a tea honoring World War II veterans at Buckingham Palace last spring.
The tween accompanied his mother to the Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance Nov. 8 at Royal Albert Hall in London. And, taking a cue from his own upbringing, last month William brought George to The Passage—the homeless shelter the prince first visited with his mother Princess Diana when he was a child—to help serve lunch.
"Obviously, I want to create a world in which my son is proud of what we do," William told Eugene Levy on an October episode of The Reluctant Traveler, "a world and a job that actually does impact people’s lives for the better.”
At the same time, he added, "I hope we don’t go back to some of the practices in the past, that Harry and I had to grow up in. And I’ll do everything I can to make sure we don’t regress in that situation.”
But, for now, George is still Kate and William's firstborn, a kid who doesn't have a cell phone yet and gets driven to school every day. And his mother is going to enjoy every minute of it while she can.
When fellow museumgoers told Kate they were in the crowd outside the hospital when the new mom left with George in 2013, the princess noted, "It only feels like yesterday.”
